- I came to know God through the hippie movement of the 60's; and it's been a "long, strange trip" since then, led and taught by God but learning slowly. I think the Quaker understanding of Christianity is probably closest to the mark, but obviously not complete, nor by any means unique. Specifically, the traditional Quaker emphasis on the Spirit as the ultimate authority.
From 1997 to 2002 I was the founding editor of Street Light, a monthly tabloid newspaper dealing with poverty issues from a spiritual perspective. The original organization has degenerated and given up the publication, but I see signs that I may soon have a resurrected Street Light as my next Assignment, an outcome I very much wish and dread!

Meanwhile some people really Got It. Stephen Gaskin had a good feel for the spiritual movement going on, as well as for how badly it went downhill for many people. "We just look back down it, and we see how twisted and distorted in this short ten years--and then you have to look 2500 years ago to Gautama Buddha, 2000 years ago to Christ, 18000 years ago to Lord Krishna, and look back on those occasions, understanding what happened to the message that came down on Haight St...."
He and many of the people from his Monday Night Class managed to keep their piece of it constructive by starting a place called The Farm, a long way off from the media storm that soon enough turned Haight St into a devouring meth-scene. I was over the bridge in Berkeley the whole time, and often over my head in confusion, as well. But when we'd tell each other things like "It'll all work out in the end," we knew them for truth-- because we were hanging on rather precariously, and could see God's hand at work helping us do that. A better name for the "psychedelics" would have been "pattern-recognition enhancers", which meant that every pattern one saw wasn't necessarily real. But there was a Big Pattern we were caught up in; we were seeing the Kingdom hazily through all the confusion, and that perception--no matter how much we still had to learn--was not an illusion.
That we escaped a greater illusion--the dead-end materialism and "realism" of the dominant straight culture--is something I can only attribute to Grace.

Man I am glad I don't have that thing anymore.
