Profile Information

Location:
Minneapolis, MN
About Me:
Mark Van Steenwyk is a member of Missio Dei (Missio Dei is an Anabaptist intentional community anchored in the West Bank of Minneapolis that pursues Jesus’ way of simplicity, prayer, hospitality, and peace). Mark is a writer, speaker, and grassroots educator (which means that he tries to mess with people’s thinking, but he usually does this outside of an institutional setting…though he has done some adjunct work with Bethel University).

He is also the general editor of Jesus Manifesto, a radical Christian webzine exploring what it means to follow the way of Jesus in the Empire.

He also conspires with emerging Anabaptists (and anabaptistic emergents) through Submergent, a network of leaders who, informed by an Anabaptist vision, are living into the Kingdom of God in a postmodern, post-colonial, post-Christian world. Together, we will re-baptize the Christian imagination!

He and his wife Amy have been married since 1997. They, along with their son Jonas, live with a random assortment of friends in South Minneapolis.

PAPAfest Session: Nurturing Spiritual Rhythms in Community

I just got a peek of the sessions for PAPA fest. They look great. If you're one of the 1000 who registered, please drop by my session on Saturday morning...here's the info:

Nurturing Spiritual Rhythyms in Community: Becoming the Uneventful Church

The Church in America is easily characterized as a weekly event facilitated by a few professional Christians in an expensive building. How do we move from event-based spirituality into a way of life with spiritual rhythms? In this session, we will

Starting a Christarchy! Group: A Basic Primer

The only centralized piece to Christarchy! is this website. Our hope is
that you’ll experiment and find your own way to pursue Jesus’ radical
path. So, while we want to avoid a cookie-cutter approach, we do think
it is helpful to give some suggestions on how to get a group started.
Below are some things that may help you get started.

1. You’ll need an organizer or two.

2. A few people (or more) to form a core.

3. In your first meeting, it may be good to share the… Continue

Welcome to the new Christarchy!

Christarchy! has just evolved from a wordpress blog to a full social network site. More groups will be starting in 2008, and we wanted to create a flexible way for the various people in the various groups to share their experiences in following the way of Jesus.

Take a look around, and you'll see:

  • A forums section where you can ask questions and share wisdom.

  • A groups section where people from your Christarchy! group can communicate. If you aren't a part of a group

i see it this way -- if all the books in the world could be filled with his exploits -- we could run out of internet and still not get "the focus" -0-

or we could. but -- we face a Christendom which has had the mind trap of Constantines TOTAL militarist insincerity -- Constantoine and the Nicean council wrote the script for generations of Pharasiaical hypocrisy and warmongers who were NOT ALIGNED with the One we call The Prince Of Peace. never were, and probably WON'T be -- and we still have to pull the beautiful out of all that dross. It;s possible, but it requires more faith in faith itself than faith in scripture or the KJV.

--

i think it's just fine to leave it with little activity and only a few members. to many people on this planet = because of history -- Christianity is EXTREMELY UNPOPULAR.

because of wars. because of the Crusades. because of many things that people have done -- claiming they were doing it in His name -- that seemed so evil that people were just not able to lie to themselves.

it's better than maybe there aren't a lot of people. if people look for it, i hope it's here....

i'm not trying to shame you. perhaps we have different perspectives on the same point,
like people who are at different distances from the same mountain, or who see that mountain from a different angle.

i just think you're just giving up before the real fun part. my disappointment stems from that fact that i am as sure now as i was when i joined that this will be a fun group, eventually and with turgid conversation -- and a lot of interested members. including people who don't really understand the message of Love...

anyway, no, not trying to scare or shame you -- but yeah, used to misunderstandings being spread by computer...

if i showed disagreement, it's because i am sure that ending it would not be the WORST mistake -- but i am sure different things can happen if it sticks around.

because of the Nings i attended the first meeting of P5Y -- the Peace in Five Years initiative. We all got together OFF LINE and now there is The Peace Room, which is basically a teeny tiny cybercafe in North Boulder. But there are people aligned for peace.

i bet you are real busy with an offline ministry that is large and challenging. But whatever.

okay mark. here is the thing. on may 30th my church is doing a concert with about 6 MN bands and we are raising money for MISSIO DEI!! so far we have aiming for aurora, if you will, smiling politely and crossbane. we are trying to get two other bands and we are setting a goal of raising $1,500 for missio dei. if we reach it or not is unknown but we will be able to get you at least SOMETHING.

so anyways. my dad (the pastor of the church) was wondering if you would be okay with coming and giving a quick little shpeal about missio dei and what you are about after the 2nd band plays. Tell me what you think. our church is Cross Point Church in Coon Rapids.
